Above, a Great Blue Heron faces the wind on a stormy afternoon.
On the same day, another heron leaned on splayed legs, trying to stay upright:

A nearby Short-billed Gull relied on its aerodynamic form as the wind pummeled the water into a semblance of beaten metal:

A group of larger gulls were unperturbed as gusts tore the water into myriad wavelets:

I went to a nearby lake a week later and it couldn’t have been more different:

There were few birds around, but among them was this splendid Common Merganser:

Elsewhere along the shore, nature revealed its hand as both a realist and abstract expressionist:
